I am a professional interpreter and certified professional translator. I began learning Spanish at the age of 11 in Houston, Texas, where I found many opportunities to use the language outside the classroom. As early as high school I was tutoring Spanish-speaking students and being asked to do informal interpreting. I went on to earn Bachelor of Arts Degrees in English (Summa cum Laude) and Spanish (With Highest Distinction) from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During my studies, I was chosen for membership in Phi Beta Kappa and earned several academic scholarships and fellowships, including a National Merit Scholarship.
My coursework included studies in French and Portuguese, secondary education and second language acquisition, and two semesters teaching undergraduate Spanish courses. After graduation, I taught Spanish to seventh and eighth grade students at a private school and began working as a medical interpreter for hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers. During more than a decade of motherhood, I have gained first-hand experience with a variety of children's developmental, educational and pediatric concerns, including special education plans (IEPs and IFSPs), autism-spectrum disorders, and food allergies. I also spent three months observing in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and became familiar with daily routines and vocabulary used in that environment.
I have taught, in a variety of settings, students from age three through college-level, including a month of teaching catechism classes to children in northeastern Mexico. Because of this background, I prefer to translate materials related to education, healthcare, parent-child themes, and literary studies, but I am prepared and willing to translate in other fields as well. Please contact me with a sample of your work so I can tell you if I can give your project my absolute best.  If not, I will help you find another translator.

Languages

Spanish to English (ATA-Certified)
Portuguese to English (ATA-Certified)

I translate only into my native language, English.  If you want me to translate work from English into Spanish, I will have my work proofread by another translator who is a native speaker of Spanish (additional charges apply), or I will help you find a translator.
